Free Legal Help for Tax Problems in Texas

Free legal help is available in Texas to address federal and state tax concerns. State tax questions might involve the Margin Tax, which businesses, estates, escrow accounts and nonprofits face. However, most Texans will have federal income tax questions, as there is no state income tax.

Basics

    Various organizations, including probono.net and the Texas Access to Justice Commission, have established TexasLawHelp.org, to support free legal help. Prospective clients first must enter their zip code or county and then describe their problem. The third question involves eligibility requirements, as not all potential clients qualify for help. Bar Associations

For instance, the Houston Bar Association (hba.org), Austin Bar Association (travisbar.com) and Dallas Bar Association (dallasbar.org/dvap) schedule multiple events to assist community members. While the volunteers practice in different areas of the law, attorneys with tax experience usually are available. Each year, lawyers provide free help to the public and satisfy pro bono hours.

Considerations

    The AARP and IRS provide free tax assistance year round. The AARP operates many volunteer sites in Texas public libraries and community centers during tax season (January through April). AARP volunteers prepare tax returns for senior citizens and people who earn less than $50,000.
